The sexual liberation of the sixties finally crashed country music\u2019s gates in the early seventies, in the form of two young Texans: Sabinal\u2019s Johnny Rodriguez, whose luxuriant black hair and Merle Haggard timbre made him country\u2019s first \u201cyouth sex symbol,\u201d per historian Bill C. Malone; and Seminole\u2019s Tanya Tucker, with her skintight, midriff-baring outfits and husky alto\u2014a mature voice for a very underage teen. The two often toured together during their early stardom, and they\u2019ve reunited on Rodriguez\u2019s first studio album in more than a decade. (Tucker made her own return to the studio after a ten-year absence with 2019\u2019s While I\u2019m Livin\u2019, which won the Grammy for Best Country Album.) \u201cA Game That I Can\u2019t Win,\u201d written by fellow Texan Dennis Quaid, is a classic-sounding, slow two-step weeper about broken-up lovers feeling the sting of each other\u2019s absence. “While the Lukes, Blakes and FGLs may get the lion’s share of publicity at CMA
Fest, the backbone of the festival are the veteran artists who connect today’s
Nashville with its roots. Bobby Bare, Jeannie Seely and T.G. Sheppard all turned in
nostalgic sets on the Fan Fair X concourse, with the appearance of Johnny
Rodriquez a rare treat. Although the 65-year-old Texas singer… sported a cast on
his right hand that prohibited him from playing guitar, he was in excellent voice during
a heartfelt performance on Friday afternoon, offering hits like “Ridin’ My Thumb to
Mexico” and “You Always Come Back (To Hurtin’ Me).” But it was his beautiful
rendition of his 1973 Number One “That’s the Way Love Goes” that reminded fans
